Paylines, Ways and Cluster Pays: What Changes?

Three crystal grids compare a single zigzag payline, branching ways and a connected cluster.

Paylines, ways and cluster pays are three methods for deciding whether symbols connect. They can use similar artwork and bonus language, but the grid is evaluated differently in each format.

Fixed paylines follow named paths

A fixed-line slot lists the routes that cross its reels. Matching symbols must land on one of those routes, usually beginning from the leftmost reel unless the paytable says otherwise. A symbol sitting one row away can look close and still be outside the winning line.

Crackshot Carnival, for example, uses a 5 by 5 gallery with 25 fixed lines. The target-rack feature adds progress above the reels, but the base grid still pays through those listed paths.

Ways use positions on adjacent reels

Ways games remove the need for one exact zigzag. If a paying symbol appears on the required run of adjacent reels, each qualifying position can contribute to the number of combinations. The total can grow quickly when several matching symbols land on the same reel.

The shipped game Rally Up uses a 3-2-3-2-3 layout and lists 108 ways. Its rally frames can make a marked position count more than once, which is a specific feature layered onto the underlying ways calculation.

Clusters use connected groups

A cluster game treats the grid more like a board. Panel Panic pays groups of five or more matching panels connected horizontally or vertically on its 7 by 7 grid. Diagonal contact alone does not join the group.

The format does not set the RTP

A larger ways count does not automatically mean better return, and a cluster grid is not automatically more volatile. Reel weights, symbol values, features and the complete paytable determine the model.

Frequently asked questions

What is a payline?

A payline is a defined path through reel positions. A win must place the required matching symbols on an active listed path under the game’s direction rules.

What does ways to win mean?

A ways game counts matching symbols across adjacent reels rather than requiring one drawn line. The exact starting reel and direction depend on the game rules.

How do cluster pays work?

Cluster games pay groups of matching symbols connected along their sides on a grid. The minimum cluster size and whether diagonal contact counts are game-specific.
